    The Director, Monetization will oversee The California Times’ programmatic strategy, implementation and monetization of both the LA Times’ and San Diego Union-Tribune’s digital properties. 



    This position will be responsible for leading digital monetization efforts within the company, including yield optimization, programmatic sales & ad operations, with a collective goal of maximizing advertising revenue.

    • Perform exhaustive analysis of past and existing programmatic business and determine the right path forward
    • Inform leadership at the California Times as to macro market dynamics in the digital advertising landscape that should affect corporate digital strategy and direction
    • Critically evaluate existing programmatic platforms and make recommendation for revamped tech stack
    • Investigate framework for A/B testing to understand impact of ad footprint changes on user churn and performance
    • Understand the level of inventory segmentation available by content type and user behavior for targeting in ad server and selling to advertisers
    • Implement yield optimization
    • Redefine ad quality settings for each programmatic partner balancing UX with revenue goals
    • Socialize concept of maximizing competition by placing advertisers at the same ad server priority with few exceptions
    • Onboard new programmatic platforms and demand partners
    • Design process for proactive management of programmatic platforms and demand partners
    • Manage account profitability; identify, assess and implement strategic organizational capabilities and partner initiatives in a profitable manner
    • Attend key industry events and evangelize on behalf of the California Times
    • Help to train sales staff on programmatic selling tactics, audience targeting capabilities and campaign fulfillment


    • Revenue goals will be determined and evaluated for success
    • There is a budget for this group embedded in the overall DAO budget
    • Responsible for negotiating fairly with vendors


    • Candidate should have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
    • 10-12 years of media experience, including 7 years of programmatic experience. 
    • Demonstrate innovation using data, technology and insights to further advance programmatic solutions.
    • Ability to apply critical thinking and analysis in business writing.
    • Ability to drive revenue and process improvements through analytics and optimization
    •  Travel is required.
